Happy National Hunting & Fishing Day
National Hunting and Fishing Day is Saturday, September 23.  Please take the time to enjoy the outdoors with your friends and the ones you love.  This year those celebrating National Hunting and Fishing Day will also be able to celebrate at least a decade of public support for their activities, according to a nationwide poll conducted by Responsive Management of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The poll found that support for hunting and fishing has remained strong over the past decade with approximately every 3 out of 4 Americans approving of legal hunting and more than 9 out of 10 approving of recreational fishing.  (Source: Outdoor Wire/ASA/Duda)

U.S. Judge Declares Boating and Fishing Illegal On Mississippi River and All Navigable Waters

“In unprecedented action, Judge Robert G. James, United States District Court, Western District of Louisiana, has declared it is to be criminal trespassing for the public to boat, fish, or hunt on the Mississippi River and other navigable waters of America affirming the arrest of anglers and boaters utilizing the waters of the Mississippi River (Normal Parm, et al v. Sheriff Mark Shumate). This ruling declares illegal all recreational boating, fishing, fishing tournaments, waterfowl hunting, and general pleasure boating on navigable waters, unless conducted within the main channel of the river, or with the permission of all riparian landowners along the navigable river.”  SCI is still looking in to this ruling and will advise when more information becomes available.  (Source: ABBRA)

Upper Mississippi Plan Available

The Fish and Wildlife Service has issued its final Record of Decision and Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.  The Plan appears to maintain or improve the hunting and fishing opportunities available at this refuge, which is the most heavily-visited refuge in the country.  You can find more information about the plan at: http://www.fws.gov/midwest/planning/uppermiss/index.html#ROD

New Group Sets ‘Sites’ on Stopping Hunting
A new website from The American Hunt Saboteurs Association is looking to stop you in the field while you are hunting.  The site claims that the group “seeks to provide knowledge and generate ideas regarding all aspects of the fight to protect animals and their habitat.  Here you will find information about disrupting hunting activities, eliminating death as a recreational activity, saving 'game animals,' and eradicating the perversion  known as 'sport' hunting.  This site is not intended to be a forum for debate: it is intended to be a source for tactics.”  The site can be found at www.huntsab.org and SCI will keep you posted on any developments.

Crosshairs Correction
In the 9/13 edition of Crosshairs regarding the new Refuge Caucus on Capitol Hill, we inadvertently listed Representative Ron Kind as a Democrat from Minnesota.  Ron Kind is from Wisconsin.  We apologize for the error.
